[Review] Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin – Let’s Rock!

Standard

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin made great impact to millions of consumers around the globe… now it’s time to recognize the features that make it stand out as ‘Ubuntu’.

Let’s Get It On. Feature-By-Feature.

I usually do my reviews by enumerating the features and writing down my thoughts it about one by one. So let’s get started shall we?

1. The Heads-Up Display (HUD)

The Heads-Up Display is Ubuntu’s new and innovative approach to accessing application menus, now you no longer need to browse and structured menu just to execute a single command! It’s as simple as pressing the ‘ALT’ key on your keyboard and start typing! It’s that simple!

2. Unity. Much Better.

Unity just got even better thanks to addition a ‘Video’ lens, now it’s easier to browse for online video content and watch them! All inside the Dash! But aside from the addition, there was also a subtraction… I’m pretty you noticed what that was. You know, the eight giant overhauls? They’re gone and got replaced by an overviews of your recent downloads, accessed files and used applications.

Oh and one more thing about Unity, it’s way more fast and responsive now thanks to the updates and performance enhancements that landed in Precise! So Unity just runs like lightning and delivers your content in a breeze!

3. Where Is The Menubar? Oh They’re Right There!

In the previous Ubuntu releases, finding the menubar was a minor issue among new users… But now this is solved! Now whenever you open an application, the menubar is displayed on the top panel for a short while then fades away smoothly – so you won’t get confused where the menus are.

4. OK, I Downloaded An Application From The Software Center… But Where Are They?

New Ubuntu users had trouble when they download and install new applications – they don’t know how to launch them or where it could be found. Now you don’t need worry where your new installations are! Whenever you install an app from the USC, the application will appear on the launcher with a flying animation and an indicator of the download/installation progress! No more confusions!

5. LightDM. New Look. Logging In With Style.

Logging In to your computer has a new approach thanks to the new LightDM in Precise – It has slick new animations and it inherits the background of currently selected user! Now that’s what we call ‘fancy’.

6. Quicklists. More Of Them.

Quicklists make it easy to access the commands you use most in applications, in Precise apps just got more them! Now the big fat button (Dash Home) can let you access the lenses faster by using the quicklists, rythmbox can let you control playback trough quicklists… and basically more apps! You can even create your quicklists!

Conclusion?

Ubuntu 12.04 is by far the best release I ever got my hands on, it delivered more than it boasted and proved to live up to our expectations. What now? Go grab yourself a taste!

  1. I really enjoyed this review, and I want to thank you for doing it. Ubuntu 12.04 is truly a wonderful operating system, although for me, it is a serious learning curve. I did purposely wait a year to even bother with Unity and frankly I am glad. What else did you enjoy about working with this release, and were there any things that you didn’t like about it?
